Hi Steph, congrats on being our first DJ comp winner! so let's start at the beginning, When did you first start DJing?
I started learning to mix in 2009. I bought some decks and started playing around with them in my bedroom. I didn’t play out in a club until 2013 after I played in front of a friend for the first time. Initially, it was never my intention to play in front of people!
What inspired you to take to the decks?
I’ve always had a love for different types of music. When I started going to clubs, I realised that there is nothing quite like hearing music on a great sound system. It wasn’t until I saw Annie Mac DJ for the first time that I was really inspired to actually get some decks
Tell us a little about your journey so far
I’ve DJed in clubs, bars and festivals and have held residencies with Reasons, Switch, Move, Trap93 and Urban Nerds. I’ve hosted a couple of radio shows on Nasty FM and Mode FM. My sound is continually developing. When I started DJing, I played a lot more bass and garage and now I play a lot more deep and groovy house. Although, depending on the event you never know where you might take it! I really enjoy playing both warm up slots and peak times.
What's been your highlight gig until now?
Any gig I play with Reasons is always incredible. Super passionate and inspiring events and crowds. My absolute highlight gig would have to be playing on the Smirnoff House Stage with Mixmag at TRNSMT festival in Glasgow this summer. Everything was magical from the vibe, to the DJ sets, to the crowd. Smirnoff House and Mixmag are committed to equality and this really showed through the line up, atmosphere and energy on stage, it was pretty special.
Where would you like to see your DJ career take you.
I have been playing around with Ableton for a while and have now started producing my own music. I really cannot wait to start playing my own music out! You will hear some stuff from me soon...
What can we expect from you at Femmme Fraiche this Sat?
Nice groovy, warm up vibes with a fun twist.
