Space Skanx - our new illustrator
If you’ve been hiding under a rock and hadn’t noticed, the last couple of events we got some fancy new feminist-style illustrations for our flyers and artwork design. These fabulous artworks have been created by Space Skanx, a European illustartor who first got into illustration as a kid, just to make her friends laugh, and now she’s considering it a full-time job! We love working with her and we thought we should get to know her a little better and shed light on her awesome work. Check out our interview with Space Skanx below..
INTERVIEW WITH SPACE SKANX
For someone who hasn't seen your work before, how would you describe your style and aesthetic?
Pretty pastels and neons against a black cosmic background, creating very high-contrast visuals, bold, sexual, will make you giggle.
Most of your work, has a strong female empowerment message or statement, what lead you into making work of this nature?
I grew up in an environment where female sexuality was always looked down upon. Taking back the power of the word „skank“ and representing female sexuality, and sexuality in general, as a positive aspect of our daily lives is an important message, I think.
Absolutely! So where do you get the inspiration for your illustrations then?
Coversations, sexual fantasies (both mine and other people’s), everyday situations transformed into messages of empowerment. I think of my art as self-care for me, and something interestiing other people can see.
So tell us about your workflow, what tools do you use to make your illustrations, and how do you go about crafting it from idea to conception to completion?
The work displayed on my Instagram account is all digital, I use Autodesk Sketchbook for all of the designs. I usually start off with an idea or a statement - at first I just make a really, really messy rough sketch and then it somehow develops into my signature space skanx aesthetics.
FAB - so tell us how did you get into illustration and how long have you been working as a professional illustrator?
It all started by just making wallpapers for me and my friends since I can remember, but art has always been a huge part of my life since my family is very art-oriented. I recently made an Instagram account and had very low expectations, but people seemed to like what I draw, so I started taking it more seriously as a full time job.
That's pretty awesome, yeah we stumbled across you on Instagram and loved your work instantly, so it worked!! so if someone wanted to become an illustrator, what advice would you give them?
Be yourself, don’t let the negative thoughts or other people’s comments get to you. Practice and better yourself as much as you can, take inspiration from other artists, or from life in general. Always stay real and true to your vision.
Solid advice!! Now as you know, we like to support women here at Femmme Fraiche, tell us about some other female / FI / Non-binary artists, you think we should check out?
Definitely check out Exotic Cancer, Cosmic Wave Art, Robin Eisenberg, Kimchi Muschi, Sugarbone, and Exotic Chub on Instagram and other platforms.
Fab, we def will. So finally where can we see your work?
Most of my work is displayed on my Instagram account (@space.skanx), website and shop coming soon!.
Awesome, thank you for the insight and peeps, go check out Space Skanx Insta and give her a like and some love!
